Side Control: Crossface, Underhook, and Structural Pressure

Side control holds when your weight goes through the opponent's shoulder line and hips, not through your knees. Here is how to build pressure that is structural rather than muscular.

Side control is less a pin than a set of connections that remove the opponent's ability to face you. The crossface turns their head away from you, the underhook or far-side arm control stops them building a frame, and your hips stay low and heavy on the mat rather than perched on your knees. Most of the work is done by skeletal alignment: chest angled across their sternum, toes driving into the floor, elbows boxing their near shoulder and hip. When those connections are set, holding the position costs very little effort, which is what makes the attacks available.

  • Drive the crossface arm across the jawline so their head turns away from your hips.
  • Keep your hips on the mat and your knees off it, spreading weight through your chest.
  • Box the near hip with your far knee or shin so they cannot re-guard underneath.

  • Kneeling upright beside them, which turns your weight into a stack they can bridge and roll.
  • Reaching for a submission before the head and hips are controlled, giving away the position for free.
  • Letting their near elbow slip inside your chest, which rebuilds the frame that starts every escape.

Put it into practice

Pressure without hands

  1. Start in side control with both hands clasped behind your own back for sixty seconds.
  2. Have your partner attempt slow bridges and shrimps while you answer only by shifting hips and chest.
  3. Release the hands and add the crossface, repeating the same minute with the same low posture.
  4. Switch roles and note which of your own escapes stopped working against the heavier structure.
