Guards & Passing

Open Guard: Distance Management and Grip Hierarchy

Open guard is a distance problem before it is a technique problem. Your feet, knees and hands each own a range, and the grips you take determine which range you keep.

Open guard is not one position; it is a set of ranges with different tools in each. At long range your feet on the hips and biceps hold the passer out while your hands manage their sleeves and collar. At medium range your shins take over as the barrier, which is where de la Riva and the knee shield live. At close range you are back to hooks and body locks. Most beginners fail here not because they lack techniques but because they take grips that do not match the range the passer is actually at, and the gap gets stepped into.

Key points

  • Point your feet at your opponent constantly; the moment your soles face away, they are already past you.
  • Take a sleeve or collar grip before placing a foot, so the leg has something to push against.
  • Use the de la Riva hook behind the knee to steer their hips rather than to hold them still.
  • Match your grip to the range: sleeves and collar at distance, ankles and pant cuffs when they close.
  • Keep your hips mobile and off the mat, since a pinned hip is a passed guard waiting to happen.

Common mistakes

  • Pushing with the feet while your hands hold nothing, which lets the passer strip your legs one at a time.
  • Sitting up into a passer who is already inside your knee line instead of first recovering the distance.
  • Holding grips with locked elbows and straight legs, which turns every exchange into a strength contest.

Put it into practice

Range ladder with grips

  1. Have your partner stand at arm's length and circle slowly while you keep both feet aimed at their hips.
  2. Add a cross-sleeve grip and hold the long range for sixty seconds without letting them touch your knees.
  3. Switch to a de la Riva hook each time they step a leg forward, holding it for three seconds.
  4. Finish with two minutes where they pass at half speed and you work only on distance and grips.
